What is Indian Forest Service ?

Indian Forest Service(IFS) is one of the three Services to All India.The test is carried out for recruitment into India ‘s forestry services.The other two are Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) All India Commands.

Indian Forest Service is one of India’s Civil Services, and is part of the All India Services sector apex.IFS programs are put under separate State structures and joint structures, although they have the authority to represent both within the State and Central Governments.

IFS service ‘s key mandate is to enforce the National Forest Policy which aims to ensure environmental conservation and ecological balance.

An IFS officer is completely independent of district administration and exercises in its own jurisdiction administrative, legal, and financial powers.IFS officers hold all top positions in the State forest service.

The UPSC conducts the Indian Forest Service exam each year for recruiting officers into the forest service.The service’s primary mission is to control the natural resources of the land, and enforce the National Forest Policy.

Please note that the candidates will not be allowed the following combination of optional subjects:

  • Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering
  • Agriculture and Forestry
  • Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
  • Of the Engineering subjects namely, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering – not more than one subject.

IMPORTANT: Candidates will need to remember that all papers will be in English only, as that is the only IFS medium for test.

IFS (Pre) 2020 New Date 

The UPSC has confirmed a new IFS 2020 exam date.The 2020 test for Civil Services (Pre) will take place on 4 October 2020.The result is set to be published in November.Candidates participating in the screening round will be named for the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination 2020, to be conducted from 28 February 2021 onwards.

Earlier, because of Coronavirus outbreak (COVID 19), the UPSC postponed the Civil Services (Pre) 2020 review.The postponement of the Pre exam would also influence the selection process for the Indian Forest Service (IFS).Candidates are rendered for the IFS Main exam through the Civil Services Pre test.

Update for IFS 2020:

Candidates sitting for the IFS Exam 2020 are told that they may change their choice of Pre and Mains exam centers after the same was announced by the UPSC on 1 July 2020.
Candidates can search the UPSC Pre Exam Centers page for information on how and when to make adjustments to the option of exam centers.

IFS Application Form 2020 

Candidates aspiring to the Indian Forest Service (IFS) can only apply to the (preliminary) Civil Services.There is no different application type for an IFS.There are however a few significant points that should be known to aspirants before IFS entry.

  • Candidates will meet the educational prerequisites set by the Commission in order to receive IFS eligibility.
  • Aspirants will register for the Civil Services (Preliminary) exam, and qualify for the second stage of the IFS (Main) exam in the screening phase.
  • In the Preliminary, interested applicants will be required to fill out a Detailed Application Form available on the official website.
  • As of 29 February 2021, the IFS Key Review will take place.The Civil Services (Main) review will, however, take effect from 8 January 2021 onwards.

Eligibility Criteria

1.Physical Criteria

Aspirants have to be physically fit for admission to Indian Forest Service Examination according to the physical requirements.Candidates are advised to visit the official IFS notification to review the specific regulations and laws.

2.Nationality:

  • A citizen of India,
  • or a subject of Nepal,
  • or a subject of Bhutan
  • Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • a person of Indian descent migrating from Pakistan, Burma , Sri Lanka, East African countries such as Kenya , Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Candidates from categories b , c, d, and e will submit an eligibility certificate issued by the Indian government.
  • Centers in India
    The test will take place in most of India’s states centers such as Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan , Gujarat, etc.
  • Applicants should note that there would be a limit on the number of candidates allocated to each centre, with the exception of Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur
  • Center allocation, on the basis of “first-apply-first-allocation” and once the capacity of a particular centre.is attained, the same will be frozen.
  • The primary test will take place in Bhopal, Chennai , Delhi, Dispur (Guwahati), Hyderabad , Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Port Blair and Shimla.

3.Educational Qualification:

  • Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in at least one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry , Geology, Mathematics , Physics, Statistics and Zoology, or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Forestry or Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent.
  • Applicants turning up for their degree exam (with specified subjects) can also apply.When they qualify on the outcome of the written part of the test, they must submit the proof of passing the prescribed test along with their comprehensive application form to be filled in at that point.

IFS Number of Vacancies 2020

The total number of vacancies listed in the official notice is about 90.Candidates belonging to groups SC, ST, OBC, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and PWD would be issued with the reservation according to the constitution.A number of vacancies are reserved according to the official notification issued by the UPSC.Check below for details.

4.Age Limit :

A candidate’s age should be at least 21 years and a maximum of 32 years on 1 August 2020 of the exam year, i.e. he must have been born no earlier than 2 August 1988 and no later than 1 August 1999.For the following situations the upper age limit should be relaxable:

  • For Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe (SC / ST): up to 5 years
  • Other Backward Classes (OBC): up to 3 years
  • State of Jammu & Kashmir (Domiciled from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989: up to 5 years.
  • Staff of the Defense Services: up to 5 years
  • Ex-serviceman including commissioned officers and ECOs / SSCOs who made at least 5 years of military service as on.
  • ECOs / SSCOs: Up to five years at most.

(Ministry of Defense issues a certificate that they may apply for civil employment and will be given on a three-month notice of selection from the date of receipt of the nomination offer)

  • Blind, deaf-mute and people with orthopedic disabilities: up to 10 years.

Cumulative Age relaxation:
SC, ST and OBC, which are also covered by other clauses referred to above, are liable for combined age relaxation in both categories

Number of attempts:
The maximum number of attempts limited for candidates is as follows:

  • General Candidates: 6 attempts
  • Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Candidates: No restrictions
  • Other Backward Classes: 9 attempts
  • Physically handicapped-9 attempts for general and OBC, though SC / ST

Presence for one or more examination papers will be counted as an attempt at examination.

Indian Forest Service Exam Pattern
