COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICE EXAM SYLLABUS (CDS)  is a entrance test for the recruitment of unmarried males and females (including widows and unmarried divorcees) candidates in all three areas of the Indian Defense Services , i.e.Air Force, Navy, and Indian Military.
According to the official notification for the Air Force Academy, “Married applicants over the age of 25 are eligible to apply, but they will not be provided with married housing during the training period, nor will they be allowed to stay outside the premises with family.

This review consists of two phases such as a written check and an interview with SSB.Only men and women may apply for multiple CDS Exam posts providing 418 vacancies.The payment fees are 200/-and are payable electronically in the application process.

  1. The Written Test CDS syllabus contains three sections: English, General and Elementary Mathematics.
  2. The qualified candidates need to prepare for a two-stage SSB Interview after passing CDS theoretical written exam.

CDS Exam 2020 Pattern & Syllabus

The IMA, INA and AFA 2020 offline written exam consists of three sections: English, General Knowledge, and Basic Mathematics.Whereas the examination paper for admission to OTA on the other hand consists of two sections: English and General Knowledge.Total review time for IMA, INA, and AFA is 6 hours (each section is 2 hours); while for OTA it is 4 hours (2 hours section).The overall IMA, INA, and AFA check marks are 300 while the OTA marks 200.Only objective style (Multiple Choice Questions) will form the test paper.The standard of the topics for Elementary Mathematics in CDS syllabus 2020 will be based on Class 10 level, while the standard of papers for other topics will be graduation level.

CDS Exam 2020 Marking

  • Each Question in the CDS (I) & (II) exam carries 4 choices, one of which is correct.
  • 1/3rd of the marks given to the question are deducted for any incorrect answer for the wrong answer.
  • Candidates marking more than one choice will be considered as wrong and 1/3rd mark will be deducted as such.
  • When a question remains unanswered otherwise there will be no penalty paid for the unanswered questions.

CDS 2020 Exam Pattern for SSB Interview

For INA, IMA, and AFA, the SSB interview is for 300 marks each while for OTA it is 200.The SSB interview process is composed of two phases: I and II.Those candidates who qualify for stage I will appear in stage II.The specifics of both phases of the interview are:

 

  • Stage I comprises questions based on the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT).

CDS Exam 2020 Eligibility

The CDS test is held twice a year, as discussed above.The eligibility requirements for both the exams are identical for nationality and employment.There is also a disparity in age limits times.The eligibility requirements for both the exams are as follows:

'Criteria of Nationality for CDS review
  •  An Indian Citizen should be a nominee.
  • The applicant from Nepal , Bhutan, Tibetan Refugee who migrated to India prior to 1962; and Indian People who migrated from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and East African countries are also qualified to apply for the test, given they have a certificate issued in their favour from the Indian government.
  • In the case of Gorkha subjects this certificate is not required.

Note: Applicants from countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan Refugee or a migrant from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Eastern African countries must have an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.For certain cases, however, Certificate of Eligibility will not be deemed appropriate for those who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Educational Qualification for CDS Exam

The curriculum requirements for various Indian armed forces academies are as follows:

  1. For Air Force Academy (AFA)–A 10 + 2-level Physics and Mathematics graduation or B. Tech from a recognized university or institution.
  2. For Indian Naval Academy (INA)–A nominee from a recognized university or institution should have done engineering.
  3. For Indian Military Academy (IMA)–A nominee should have graduated from any university or institution that has been recognized.
  4. For Officer Training Academy (OTA)-Applicant should have graduated from an accepted university / institution in either discipline.

Such applicants who appear in the final year of the qualifying degree may also apply for the exam.These candidates are, of course, expected to present proof of passing the qualifying examination at the time of commencement.

For AFA, the upper age limit is relaxed for applicants with a valid and existing DGCA Commercial Pilot License up to 26 years, i.e. candidates should not be born for CDS I earlier than 2 January 1995 and later than 1 January 2001 and earlier than 2 July 1995 and later than 1 July 2001 for CDS II.

Marital Status and Gender Criteria for CDS 2020 Exam

Eligibility for Indian Military Academy –

  • Only Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Naval Force Academy –

  • Only Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Air Force Academy –

  • Unmarried male candidates below 25 years of age.
  • Married candidates above 25 years of age are also eligible but such candidates are not allowed to live with their family out of the premises.
  • Candidates are not allowed to marry during their training period.

Eligibility for Officers Training Academy (SSC for Men) –

  • Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Officers Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course) –

  • Unmarried women
  • Issueless widows, not being remarried
  • Issueless divorcees (possessing divorce document), not remarried.

Note: Unmarried male divorcee and widower are not classified and are not eligible for the Combined Defense Services review.

Physical Standards

Applicants should remember that apart from meeting the above-mentioned eligibility requirements, they should be physically as well as mentally fit in accordance with the academy guidelines.
