WHAT IS COMBINED DEFENCE EXAMINATION ?

CDS (Combined Defense Services) is the traditional entrance exam for the recruitment of unmarried male and female candidates (including widows and unmarried, divorcees) in all three Indian Defense Services domains,that is :-

  • Air Force, Navy, and
  • Indian Army.

According to the official notification for the Air Force Academy, “Married applicants over the age of 25 are eligible to apply, but during the training period they will not be provided with married accommodation nor will they be allowed to stay outside the premises with their families.” The Union Public Service Commission ( UPSC) is responsible for administering the CDS test at all levels in India.

In February and November, the CDS Exam is held twice a year, for which the official notice is issued in October and August respectively.

CDS Training Academies

  1. Meritorious candidates who wish to serve the country by joining the defense can go to the CDS test.To apply for the CDS 2020 evaluation online, one should meet the Commission’s eligibility criteria.
  2. The candidates will be selected in written examination based on their results, followed by an interview for the intelligence and personality test.
  3. The chosen candidates undergo rigorous training based on choice and merit at the prestigious Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officer Training Academy (OTA).

CDS Notification 2020 – Check Official CDS Notification

In the months of October and August the Union Public Service Commission, UPSC issues the CDS notice twice in a year.The notice of recruitment for CDS I was issued on 30 October 2019, while the exam was held on 02 February 2020.

On 05 August the commission will file the CDS II Notice 2020.Candidates who wish to apply for the exam will have to wait for the official application notice.As per the authorities, the CDS 2 exam will take place on 08 November 2020.

CDS Exam 2020 Pattern & Syllabus

In the months of October and August the Union Public Service Commission, UPSC issues the CDS notice twice in a year.Notification of appointment of the entire CDS Exam pattern 2020 is divided into two parts–Written Test and Interview with SSB.Check below for details:

Written Exam of CDS 2020 Exam Pattern 

Note:-

  • The IMA, INA and AFA 2020 offline written exam consists of three sections: English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics.
  • While the test paper for admission to OTA on the other hand consists of two sections: English and General Knowledge.
  • Total review time for IMA, INA, and AFA is 6 hours (each section is 2 hours); while for OTA it is 4 hours (2 hours section).
  • The total IMA, INA, and AFA test marks are 300 while the OTA marks 200.Only objective style (Multiple Choice Questions) will form the test document.
  • The standard of the topics in the CDS syllabus 2020 for Elementary Math will be based on Class 10, while the standard of papers for other topics will be based on Class 10 , Whereas the paper quality for other subjects will be the graduation point.

CDS Exam 2020

Eligibility:

The CDS exam is conducted twice a year, as discussed above.

The qualifying requirements for both the exams are identical for nationality and employment.There is also a disparity in age limits dates.Below are the criteria for qualifying for both exams

Nationality:

  1. An Indian Citizen should be a nominee.
  2. The applicant from Nepal , Bhutan, Tibetan Refugee who migrated to India prior to 1962; and
  3. Indian People who migrated from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and East African countries are also qualified to apply for the exam, provided they have a certificate issued in their favour from the Indian government.
  4. In the case of Gorkha subjects this certificate is not required.

♦NOTE♦ Applicants from countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan Refugee or a migrant from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Eastern African countries must have an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

In certain cases, however, Certificate of Eligibility will not be deemed appropriate for those who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Educational Qualification for CDS Exam

Educational qualifications for different academies of Indian defence services are mention in following:

  • For Air Force Academy (AFA)–A 10 + 2-level Physics and Mathematics graduation or B. Tech from a recognised university or institution.
  • For Indian Naval Academy (INA)–A nominee from a recognised university or institution should have done engineering.
    For Indian Military Academy (IMA)–A nominee should have graduated from any university or institution that has been recognized.
  • For Officer Training Academy (OTA)-Applicant should have graduated from an accredited university / institution.

Such applicants who appear in the final year of the qualifying degree may also apply for the exam.These candidates are, of course, expected to present proof of passing the qualifying examination at the time of registration.

Marital Status and Gender Criteria for CDS 2020 Exam

ligibility for Indian Military Academy –

  • Only Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Naval Force Academy –

  • Only Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Air Force Academy –

  • Unmarried male candidates below 25 years of age.
  • Married candidates above 25 years of age are also eligible but such candidates are not allowed to live with their family out of the premises.
  • Candidates are not allowed to marry during their training period.

Eligibility for Officers Training Academy (SSC for Men) –

  • Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

Eligibility for Officers Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course) –

  • Unmarried women
  • Issueless widows, not being remarried
  • Issueless divorcees (possessing divorce document), not remarried.

Note: Male divorcee and widower are not treated under the unmarried male category and are not eligible for the Combined Defence Services exam.
