  1. अतीत के अध्ययन हेतु काल विभाजन:- जिस काल का मानव किसी प्रकार की लिपि अथवा लेखन कला से परिचित नहीं था | जिस काल का मानव किसी न किसी प्रकार की लिपि से परिचित न था लेकिन वह लिपि अभी तक पढ़ी न गई हो | जिस काल का मानव किसी न किसी प्रकार की लिपि से परिचित था और वह लिपि पढ़ पढ़ चूका था |
  2. प्रागैतिहास काल:- भारत में सर्वप्रथम १८६३ ई. में पाषाण कालीन सभ्यता की खोज की गई |
    रोबर्ट ब्रूट फुट ने पहला पूरा पाषाण कालीन उपकरण मद्रास के पास पल्लावरम नामक स्थान से प्राप्त किया था |
    पूरा पाषाण काल को अध्ययन की सुविधा की दृष्टि से पुनः ३ काल में विभाजित किया जाता है
  3. हड़प्पा सभ्यता:- हड़प्पा सभ्यता एक सुविकसित नगरीय सभ्यता थी| ताम्बे से अधिक मजबूत कांसे के औज़ारो का उपयोग लेखन कला का ज्ञान, नगर शहरों में रहने को सभ्यता का प्रतीक माना जाता है|
  4. वैदिक काल:- हड़प्पा सभ्यता के पतन के बाद जिस सभ्यता का विकास हुआ उसके जानकारी वेदो से प्राप्त होती है| अंत: इस काल को वैदिक काल की उपाधि दी गई है| इसे अध्ययन की सुविधा से २ भागो में विभक्त किया गया है | प्रथम वैदिक काल या द्वितीय वैदिक काल |
  5. प्राचीन भारतीय धर्म एवं दर्शन:- जैन शब्द जिन से बना हुआ है जिसका मतलब इन्द्रियों पर विजय प्राप्त करने वाला होता है| जैन धरम के आदि प्रवर्तक ऋषभदेव थे जैन धर्म में कुल २४ तीर्थकर हुए | जैन धर्म में २३ वः २४ तिरहथकर ऐतिहासिक पुरुष में आते है |
  6. महाजनपद काल:- बुद्धकालीन भारत की पहली विशेषता जो राजनैतिक दृष्टि से महत्वपूर्ण है | ये राज्य आपस में संघर्ष करते रहते है इसलिए इस काल को संघर्षरत जनपदों का युग कहा जाता है | विकेन्द्रीकरण की प्रवर्त्ती के बावजूद इस काल में केन्द्रीयकरण के प्रयास प्रारम्भ हो गए थे|
